Our Work

1101 Decatur Street

Built in 1884, the historic building at 1101 Decatur Street possessed a storied past, with land tied to the Ursuline nuns, the Jules Sarrazin tobacco factory, and the Kingfish beer parlor. The team at Woodward Design+Build worked with the building owner to bring the historic building back to full use, providing development services, architectural design, and construction management for the entirety of the project.

Woodward renovated the dilapidated building at 1101 Decatur Street, creating 4 one-bedroom apartments and over 1,740 square feet of street level restaurant space in the heart of the French Quarter. The Woodward team carefully sequenced interior demolition and framing of the stairwells, incorporating the historic structural columns into the design of the apartment units. New masonry pediments were built on the existing 3rd story parapet wall and balcony brackets were replicated to exactly match the existing scrolls on the building. The front column was shored and rebuilt to match the existing brick veneer, and the original arched entryway and sidewalk canopy were recreated based on the building’s original design.

The renovated building also features a rooftop patio with views of the Mississippi River and French Market. Lightweight rooftop pavers were installed on a pedestal system in order to lessen the dead load of the patio on the building, allowing for a beautiful outdoor space for residents to enjoy.

The completed project has restored many historic architectural elements of the century old building while bringing 1101 Decatur Street back to its full, vibrant use.
